Basic Differences Between Toner And Ink For Printer Cartridges

Posted by xpdigita in Related topics

It’s far easier to make a choice between a printer ink cartridge or toner if one knows what the basic differences are between the two.

Ink is a liquid containing pigments or dyes and is used to ‘stain’ a surface to produce an image, text or design.  The ink is stored in a number of wells inside the cavity of the cartridge, and is squeezed through tiny holes and dispersed onto the paper.  They are cost effective, replaceable and compact.

Toner on the other hand is a carbon powder, mixed with a polymer, which is used in laser printers and photocopiers for printing images and text.  These toner powders aren’t all made the same – as the different manufacturers each have their own ‘recipe’.  The smaller the particles in the toner powder, the better the resolution will be.  Toners provide better quality, long life and efficiency.

Making the choice between the two depends on the printer type, where the printing is to be done (ie at work or at home) and budget.

If you are concerned about speed, then a laser/toner printer is the better choice as it provides more PPM (papers per minute).  The difference between the two is around three times the speed – ie where an ink cartridge gives 2/3 PPM, a toner printer can give 9 or 10 PPM.

There are variable results when it comes to the issue of quality.  Inkjet is better for small amounts of printing and excels with photos whereas laser is better for high volume and text.

For the budget conscious, an inkjet printer is much cheaper than a laser printer, but the operating costs can sometimes, although not always, be higher.

From a manufacturing perspective, toner is more difficult to produce and therefore costs more.  But toner can be a more cost-effective option in the longer-term say established Perth toner cartridges supplier, Printerfuel if one calculates the cost-per-page.  A laser printer is best for large volumes as it can give up to five thousand pages per cartridge.  On the other hand, an average of 500 pages is around right for an ink cartridge.  Compare the number of pages vs the price of the ink or toner cartridge and then make your purchasing decision!.
